SAT and ACT Test-Preparation Tips

SAT and ACT test scores play an important role in the college admissions process. You'll want to study hard to make sure you do the best you can! There are a variety of resources available to help you prepare. Start by asking your high school counselor if your school offers test-preparation classes, sample tests, and even tutoring. Here are some tips to help you prepare for and succeed on the SAT and ACT.

SAT and ACT Test-Preparation Tips

  • Start early! As soon as school starts, find out how much time there is before test day so you can put together a study plan. Use this time to start studying the subjects covered on the test.
  • Sign up to take the PSAT or PLAN. Taking these tests will give you an idea of what to expect.
  • Check to see if your school offers tutoring or test-preparation classes. Practicing for the test is the best way to prepare.
  • There are many sample tests available online. Use these, at the very minimum, to help prepare you for the SAT or ACT.

SAT and ACT Test-Taking Tips

  • Relax and be confident that you will do well on the test.
  • Do not spend too much time on one question. The ACT and SAT are timed tests, so try to answer the easier questions first and then go back to the harder ones.
  • On the SAT, if you don't believe you know the correct answer to a question, do not guess. You will lose points for an incorrect answer but not for an answer left blank.
  • Get at least 8 hours of sleep on each of the two nights before the test. You'll want to be alert and ready to do your best!
  • On the morning of the test, eat a healthy breakfast that includes protein and carbohydrates so you are nourished and focused.
  • Arrive at the testing place at least 20 minutes early to avoid any unnecessary rushing. That gives you time to choose your seat and get organized.

If your SAT and ACT scores don't meet a college's admission requirements, talk with your high school counselor. You may still have a chance to be accepted on the strength of good grades, a strong college essay, or other factors.

I think you need to get the College Cost & Planning Report into every high school. So many parents are confused with this student aid and how to pay for college. I think you need to get it out there. So many people need to understand how things work. I'm so happy I did. I wouldn't change anything.
