Understanding How Student Aid Works

Each year, students and their families rely on student aid to help pay for college. Student aid comes from many sources – the federal government, state governments, colleges, private organizations, and businesses. Nearly everyone is eligible for some student aid.

College students received more than $170 billion in aid during the 2008-2009 academic year. The competition for aid is fierce because more students need help paying for the often high cost of college. Knowledge is power! Prior to receiving this form, we had the feeling of 'how are we going to pay for this' and 'we'll be paying off a college loan like a house payment'. The College Cost & Planning Report helped diminish some of those feelings by showing us the different routes we have to fulfill that college cost. And with several colleges that we had considered, it also showed us where our child fits in academically with each of the colleges we had applied to or had considered applying to. It made us feel more comfortable with our child's college choice.
